Cosima Hawemann graduated from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany in 2004 under Prof. Jörg Immendorff, Prof. Helmut Federle and Prof. A.R. Penck. She was awarded the prestigious title of Meisterschülerin (lit.: master-class student).
Hawemann’s rigorous training under these acknowledged master painters has allowed her to develop her innate expressionist sympathies into a contemporary visual language that is compelling and uniquely hers. Her painterly approach to the philosophical investigations of memory and identity highlight their intrinsic ambiguity. These weighty topics can be unsettling; however Hawemann never shies away from the investigative challenges. Her work gives us the opportunity to reflect on corruptibility of memory, and with it, potentially the Self.
Hawemann has been working as a professional artist since graduation, participating regularly in curated commercial and public exhibitions. She has been the recipient of several artist residencies. Her work is held in many international private collections.
